Chapter 13

L ou had to admit, Sebastian’s theory about a partner being more likely to kill Vicki than one of her investors was compelling. But even the beautiful view out of the panoramic windows overlooking the valley in his hillside mansion didn’t make this conversation any more pleasant.

“So we need to figure out if Vicki was working with a partner.” Lou tapped her foot as thoughts populated her overwhelmed brain.

“I could have my PI look into it, if you want,” he offered.

“Sure.” Lou nodded. “Couldn’t hurt, right? Maybe have them start in Brine specifically. We can start looking on our end in Button.”

“Francis and I can ask around in Brine too,” Brynn offered, gesturing to the velvet-clad man perching on the corner of the couch.

“Absolutely,” Francis said. “As I’ve said before, I—”

“You know people,” Lou, Brynn, George, and Sebastian all said in unison, laughing at how in sync their sarcasm had been in the moment.

Francis chuckled. “Ah, you’ve heard. Good.” He didn’t seem at all embarrassed.

They spent the next few minutes exchanging phone numbers so Sebastian could get ahold of them if his PI found anything, or vice versa. But if Lou thought that was the ending of their time in the house on the hill, she was sorely mistaken.

“Do you have time to stay for a tour?” Sebastian asked, his eyes lighting up at the prospect of showing his guests around his property.

Francis opened his hands toward the women, as if to remind them that he was completely free that afternoon. Brynn nodded, and so did George when Lou looked in her direction.

“Sure,” Lou said with a shrug. “We’d love to see the place.”

Sebastian began with a tour of the house, showing off the rest of his cats and the different architectural design decisions he’d made to accommodate them. Next, he took them on a tour of his expansive garage, during which George asked what the two golf carts parked in the corner were for.

Sebastian’s eyes sparkled. “Hop in. I’ll show you.”

He drove George and Lou in one cart, while Stuart operated the second, holding Francis and Brynn. They started out on small pathways branching out from the house. They were pristine and paved, like miniature roadways, made just wide enough for the golf carts.

Lou stared down the hill and saw that similar pathways crisscrossed all over the hillside under the trees. She grabbed onto the roof as Sebastian took a turn onto a path leading up the hill.

“They make great running or walking paths when I’m not using them to drive on,” Sebastian narrated as he drove, noticing Lou admiring them.

“I bet.” The thought of running along these quiet, wooded pathways sounded equally peaceful and like a great workout.

Winding up the hill, Sebastian pointed out little things here and there like his favorite gnarly tree or a place where he accidentally tipped one of the golf carts over last fall. But the true reason for the trip became clear once they came to the summit of the hill,
